Sir Elton John is one of pop music’s great survivors. Born 25 March, 1947, as Reginald Kenneth Dwight, he started to play the piano at just four. At the age of 11, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. His first band was called Bluesology. He teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin and changed his name to Elton John (merging the names of saxophonist Elton Dean and Long John Baldry). The duo wrote started off writing songs for Lulu and Elton John went on to become one of Britain’s most internationally acclaimed musicians. Elton has produced numerous hits over the last 4 decades, has done duets with many stars, ranging from Cliff Richard to George Michael, and has worked on numerous hit musicals, including The Lion King.
Sir Elton John registered his civil partnership with long-term partner David Furnish on December 21, 2005, the first day that civil unions were legal in England and Wales. Sir Elton John is well known as a campaigner for AIDS research, having founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has become one of the world´s largest non-profit AIDS organisations. He was knighted in 1998 for his contribution to music and fund-raising for AIDS charities.
