Dame Stella Rimington
Dame Stella Rimington began her career in 1959 as an Assistant Archivist in the Worcestershire County Records Office. In 1962 she transferred to the India Office Library in London where she was an Assistant Keeper. In 1965 she moved to New Delhi, India and worked part-time for the Security Service (MI5) there. On her return to London in 1969 she embarked on a full-time career with the Security Service which was to span 27 years. She held a variety of positions in the main branches of the Service. Dame Stella Rimington became Director General of MI5 in February 1992, the first woman to hold the post and the first person whose name was made public. During her time in office she pursued a policy of greater openness for MI5. Under her leadership the Service extended its role in counter-terrorism and began work against organised crime. She was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the Universities of Nottingham and Exeter and was elected Alumna of the Year by Edinburgh University in 1994. She delivered the 1994 Dimbleby Lecture on BBC TV on the Security Service's work. In 1996 she was made a Dame Commander of the Bath in the New Year's Honours List. She is a Non-Executive Director of Marks and Spencer plc and of BG Group (British Gas) .A great, insightful speaker with lots of anecdotes and real life experiences that will enthral and motivate.
